The
sun's ultraviolet rays, and moisture from rainfall and dew,
tend to deteriorate the binder of a paint. As the binder
breaks down, the pigment
is released in a powdery or chalk-like form shown on the person's
fingertips in this photograph. The result of excessive chalking is erosion of the paint film, poor tint retention, and a faded appearance.
