It's not a pretty picture. The unsightly effects of mildew are seen in this test panel (on the right). Brown or black spots and/or a general gray appearance are tell-tale signs of mildew growth. The discoloration is caused by the mildew spores that flourish on nutrients found on top of paint and on the surface beneath the paint film. Mildew is commonly found in damp, dark areas on the north or west side of a house, especially in warm, humid climates.Although it's impossible to prevent mildew altogether, top quality paints (as on the left side of the panel) are formulated with mildewcides that resist this type of growth.
